How to Measure a Torsion Spring
- 1). Unwind the spring so it is not stretched out at all. There shouldn't be any gaps between any of the coils of the spring.
- 2). Check one end of the spring to find the direction of the spring wind. If the end travels in a clockwise direction then your spring is left wound. A right wound spring will have the end pointing in the counterclockwise direction.
- 3). Set the teeth of the caliper so each one is just inside the spring as close to the inner walls as possible. This is the inside diameter of the spring.
- 4). Count twenty coils from one end and measure the length of that section. Divide the number by 20 to find the wire size of each individual coil.
- 5). Hold the tape measure at the very top of the spring ensuring to include the end of the spring. Look at the tape at the bottom of the spring to find the length of the spring.
