Directions for NFL Helmets Made With Plastic Canvas
- 1). Draw a football helmet or print out a copy of a helmet outline from the Internet and cut it out. This will be the main pattern. Draw the chin strap and cut it out. The chin strap must be a separate pattern.
- 2). Trace the patterns onto the sheet of plastic canvas with a grease pencil. Cut the helmet and chin strap shapes out of the plastic canvas.
- 3). Use a continental stitch for the main color of the helmet. The continental stitch is a basic needlepoint stitch often used for outlines and to stitch single rows. For a Pittsburgh Steelers' helmet, you would use black yarn. Use an overcast stitch to outline the entire helmet and chin strap. An overcast stitch goes on the edge because it is a whip stitch that prevents fraying and unraveling. Use gray yarn to fill in the chin strap.
- 4). Use white, yellow, red and blue yarn to embroider the Steelers logo to the helmet.
- 5). Stitch the chin strap to the helmet to secure it in place.
