Install Metal Hurricane Shutters

• 1). Find the center of the window by measuring the width and dividing by 2. Measure 3 inches above the center and mark this spot with a pencil. Measure the center of the shutter header. Hold the header above the window and match its center with the window’s center. Make sure it is level.
  
  
• 2). Measure evenly out from the center for the remaining nails and anchors. Mark with a pencil. These spots will indicate where you will anchor the hurricane shutters.
  
  
• 3). Drill holes in each marked spot. Make sure the holes are the size of the nails and anchors.
  
  
• 4). Hold the header up to the window again. Insert the screws through the header and into the holes. Tighten them. The header will hold the shutter panels and keep them secure during storms.
  
  
• 5). Slide the panels into the header and make sure they’re centered and level. Mark the bottom of the panels with a pencil. Remove the panels and mark 1/4-inch above the bottom. These markings are where you'll install the sill for the shutters. The sill holds the shutters much like the header does.
  
  
• 6). Measure even spots along the bottom for the sill for each nail and anchor.
  
  
• 7). Drill a hole for each spot you’ve marked on the bottom. Again, make sure the size of the holes matches the size of the nails and anchors.
  
  
• 8). Put the sill up to the window and insert the screws through the holes. Tighten the screws.
  
  
• 9). Slide the panels into the header and sills. It helps to slide them into the header first and then into the sill.

  Install the wing nuts and studs and make sure they are secure. The hardware will keep the panels in the header and the sill.
