How to Add Backsplash Tiles to Countertop
- 1). Lay a strip of painter's tape along the surface of the countertop where it meets the backsplash (to prevent grout from getting on the countertop when you grout the backsplash). Stick additional tape to the wall all around the perimeter of the backsplash.
- 2). Use your grout float to spread grout throughout the backsplash, starting at the top and working your way down. Press the grout into the lines while squeezing it off the tile face. Don't grout the horizontal seam between the backsplash and the countertop, but leave the space open.
- 3). Let the grout sit in the lines for about a minute then wipe down the tile face with a damp sponge to take up the excess grout. Wipe around the perimeter of the backsplash as well to smooth out any grout that is jutting out from the ends of the lines.
- 4). Run the eraser side of your pencil along the horizontal seam between the backsplash and the countertop to remove any grout that has piled into the open space there. Remove the painter's tape from the countertop and the wall.
- 5). Let the grout set for a day. Use your caulk gun to fill the space between the backsplash and the countertop with a smooth, straight line of caulk. Caulk around the perimeter of the backsplash as well.
