How to Fill Up a Sinkhole

8
    • 1). Phone the local utilities providers to come out and mark any infrastructure lines such as gas, water, sewer, cable and electrical lines.

    • 2). Put on gloves and excavate the sinkhole with post hole diggers or a shovel. Dig until you reach solid rock or the rock bed. You may have to dig down several feet to reach the rock bed. You will know when you hit it because you will not be able to dig through it.

    • 3). Place large rocks on top of the rock bed until it is entirely covered. Use rocks about the size of a head of lettuce or a bit larger, making the layer about 6 inches to 8 inches deep. Place the rocks in close proximity to one another, making the layer as dense as possible.

    • 4). Place a layer of smaller stones about the size of baseballs on top of the larger rocks. As with the larger rocks, make this stone layer dense. Once the smaller stones are covering the larger rocks, put down a thick layer of gravel.

    • 5). Cover the rock and gravel layers with geotextile fabric or landscape fabric. Once covered, add a thick layer of coarse sand over the geotextile fabric or landscape fabric. Tamp down the coarse sand with a hand tamper. Then pile soil on top of the tamped sand until the hole is filled. Put sod down over the soil, and water with a garden hose to grow grass.
