How to Make Your Own Oil Floor Finish
- 1). Apply a liberal coating of oil over the surface of a wooden floor that has already been properly sanded and stained. Rub the oil into the floor with a cloth using a circular motion.
- 2). Wait about 45 minutes to allow the oil to soak in. If the wood appears dry within this time period, apply another coat of oil and rub it in again. Repeat until the floor stays shiny and is unable to absorb any additional oil after 45 minutes.
- 3). Rub the floor with a dry cloth and look for any moist spots where the oil may be seeping from the wood. Buff these away with the cloth.
- 4). Allow the oil to penetrate for 12 to 24 hours between additional coats. Monitor closely for signs of oil pooling on the surface of the wood and wipe off any visible oily spots.
- 5). Permit the floor to cure for at least one week to 10 days. Expect the floor to take up to one full month to cure completely. Following the oil finish with an application of wood floor sealing wax is optional after this time.
